Padel court construction in Australia: a solution built for the coast

Coffs Harbour is becoming part of Australia’s growing padel map, and The Town Padel is a good example of how the sport can adapt to the conditions of a new market. The region’s first dedicated padel club had a clear objective: to create a solid, high-quality facility capable of withstanding a demanding coastal environment while keeping the option to adapt or relocate the courts in the future.

This raised a technical question: how do you approach padel court construction in Australia without taking on the cost and permanent commitment of a project based on concrete foundations? The Town Padel found the answer in a modular, portable system built around that exact balance.

A solution for a demanding environment

A conventional installation can involve slabs, foundations, and extensive excavation before the first court is even assembled. From the outset, The Town Padel opted for a different approach: a system that could be installed efficiently, perform like a permanent facility, and retain the possibility of being relocated in the future if required.

For this project, we installed four portable, modular padel courts: one Super Panoramic court, designed to maximise visibility, and three Club models, built to meet the demands of daily play.

The solution reduces the complexity of the initial construction without compromising the stability, safety, and playing quality expected from a permanent padel facility.

Designed to withstand the coastal environment

Building close to the sea changes the equation. Salt-laden air can accelerate corrosion, making material selection particularly important. In this case, the court structures are manufactured using treated, corrosion-resistant steel designed to withstand prolonged exposure to a coastal environment.

Wind is another important factor in this part of the Australian coast. The structures are designed to remain securely anchored and stable even in strong gusts, rather than relying simply on their own weight.

The glass also needs to withstand the demands of constant play. Instead of being fixed directly to the metal structure, the panels are installed with a cushioning system that helps absorb movement and vibration. This reduces the stress transferred to the glass during impacts and helps protect the panels over time.

Even the artificial turf needs to be prepared for the local climate. Strong UV exposure can accelerate fading and deterioration, so the surface uses fibres designed to withstand prolonged exposure to sunlight. The sand infill helps keep the fibres upright and supports drainage when heavy rain arrives, an important consideration in a coastal location such as Coffs Harbour.

Keeping the courts in top condition

Installation is only part of the process. Long-term performance depends on regular maintenance and attention to the elements that protect the court over time.

Regular brushing keeps the sand infill evenly distributed and helps prevent uneven wear across the playing surface. Periodic inspections of the glass anchors and structural connections can also identify small issues before they develop into more costly repairs.

Keeping the turf free from leaves and other debris is equally important, helping the drainage system work properly when weather conditions change.

A different approach to padel court construction in Australia

The Town Padel project demonstrates that building a durable padel facility in a demanding coastal environment does not necessarily require a conventional approach.

The Town Padel shows what that balance looks like in practice. Four portable courts, engineered for a coastal climate, installed without a single foundation poured, and free to move if the club’s plans ever change.

That is what padel court construction in Australia can look like when the solution is built around the place it has to serve, rather than the other way around.
